STARR and THE CZARS
Washington, DC
https://starrandtheczars.bandcamp.com/
STARR AND THE CZARS, hailing from Washington, DC, bring together an all-star line-up of garage-rock veterans into one explosive new band. Fronted by JAKE STARR (Adam West, Jake Starr & The Delicious Fullness, Go Mod Go!, Goy Division…), the group also features PETER GREENBERG and MICHAEL LEWIS, two legends from Boston’s trailblazing DMZ and THE LYRES.
SEAN CROWLEY (frontman for Washington, DC’s The Hall Monitors) shares lead vocal duties with Starr and summons howls and thunder from his six-string, while NATHANIEL OSGOOD (drummer for The Hall Monitors) keeps the chaos stitched together, providing the band’s hypnotic backbeat.
Together as Starr and The Czars, they deliver what they call The Unauthorized Garage Gospel — a fuzz-soaked, amp-blowing, foot-stomping sound that thrives on raw urgency. Their debut album, IT’S THE BAD TIMES, is a full-volume sermon of fuzz, filth, and frantic stomp, built on the legacy of decades in the underground but blazing ahead with unrepentant energy.
The all-star line-up of STARR AND THE CZARS has laid down 12 tracks of intensely explosive musical goodness called IT’S THE BAD TIMES! From the fiery cover art right down to the angry fuzz guitars and pulsating, pounding drums, this is one album to play loud, pushing those blasé blues and existential angst right on down the street. Although you will feel a whole lot better, make sure you have some good insurance in case your walls do crack or those IKEA cabinets warp.
TEEN COBRA
Washington, DC
https://teencobra.bandcamp.com/
Teen Cobra is a Venezuelan lo-fi punk duo by way of Washington, D.C., formed in 2018 by Neil (guitar, vocals) and Veronica (drums, vocals).
Their minimalist one-two punch of punk draws equally from ’60s garage rock, the late-’70s CBGB frenzy, British post-punk sensibilities, and who-knows-what-the-fuck since then.
They have released two 7-inch records, a live cassette, and a full-length LP.
With a shitty guitar, a snare, and a floor tom, Teen Cobra shine a light on the majesty of the DIY music ethos.
